Putting the cancer stick in his mouth did ease him a little but he still needed to light it to get that relaxing nicotine. Shuffling out his pockets the lighter fell and he was lucky enough for his hand to stop shaking so ruggedly to get a flick to make little candle flame. Lighting one end and sucking through the other he took all his lungs could get before pulling it away and blowing a puff of smoke. He would apologize but he still needed a few more puffs to be able to talk again. He heard the door open and the skeleton showed up...strange ingredients for breakfast though...but he couldn't judge. Sitting up on the floor he was at enough ease to give a nod.
"Th-thanks..thanks a lot.." He can't let his emotions get the best of him anymore, he wasn't in a situation he could just slip out of anymore. That meant he had to play it cool like she said, no need to put danger where it isn't. He looked back at Winter and sighed blowing a bit of smoke in the process, "I think I would like that tea now if..that's alright with you?"

*'cause someone really cares about you. Wasn't smoking bad for humans? Well, that and junk food, which he had brought plenty of so he couldn't really judge the habits of slim there. The skeleton watched the two passively in the doorway while Winter calmed the guy down and agreed to his offer of food. He moved out and away from the door, letting it shut behind him as he let the investigator take the bag. She seemed slightly startled at what he had brought making him have to suppress a laugh. It definitely was not a traditional breakfast.
* i guess you told smokey the bear about the kid?
He asked as he snagged a bottle of ketchup from the bag Winter now held before he moved over to the client couch and flopped onto it letting his legs hang over the sofa's arm. He was too lazy to sit properly and at an ungodly hour he didn't really care to try. Slim managed to get his stick lit before he asked for tea as he slowly calmed down. With the context, Sans assumed that he had been offered it earlier but turned it down. The skeleton started to wonder if it was a good idea to be smoking in a building with so much loose paper around but decided not to point it out. It wasn't his building so if it burned down it wasn't his problem.

"Sure, give me just a second." She answered with a smile of understanding, placing the contents of the bag on the desk as she snagged a couple of cups and the pot of warm water from the small table with the coffee pot, adding the tea bag to let it steep before resuming to answer the skeleton's question. Meanwhile, Sans had managed to snag a bottle of ketchup from the bag and had made his way to the couch. Winter turned to face him with a steady sigh, leaning with her back to the desk as she tried to decide how to best explain the situation. "Yeah, I told him. Even so, child serial killers aren't exactly normal on the surface, so it can be a little difficult for someone to wrap their mind around. There's also the added danger to his family that needs to be handled carefully to avoid spooking Chara into doing anything rash, but I may have something in mind." Winter explained calmly, though she did not look happy about the scheme that she had in mind. She hated asking for favors. Instead, she quickly averted her attention, pausing to reach over and retrieve the now brewed tea and offering it to the young man, who had managed to get his cigarette lit, much to her relief as Winter wasn't overly familiar with lighters, never having smoked herself. "Here. It's nothing fancy, but with any luck, it'll help to ease the nerves." She informed kindly, moving to scoop up the papers from the floor to give him some room to smoke, just in case to avoid any fire hazards. Once Winter had placed them on the desk, she decided to dig into the bag to retrieve a hot dog and bun, unable to recall eating since she and Sans had visited the shaved ice stand. It was probably a good thing that genetics played in her favor given her terrible diet and habit of skipping meal times. "Don't you want anything besides ketchup?" The detective questioned Sans curiously, noting that he hadn't taken anything else from the bag. As she did so, Winter began to nibble at the lukewarm meal, not that it being cold really bothered her in the least. Winter was the type of person that could eat food straight out the freezer and not flinch, so a chilly hot dog and bun were no problem for the overworked detective. After taking a few puffs, he started to finally calm down. Other than the powers and most of his looks, this was the one thing he didn't like that he got from his dad. All it did was make him less healthy and his mom worry more about it even in her own sickly state. But it was now something he was hooked on that he couldn't help right now. It's like he's finding more things to kill him, first cigarettes and now the empathy for a murdering child, what's next a psychotic monster made out of puppies and rainbows? Looking up he gave a soft smile for the drink and set it down on the floor before replacing the cigarette with the tea and not even taking precautions as he took a sip. It was still hot so it burned his lip alittle and wincing he made sure not to spill it on the floor or on him. It was hot but didn't taste bad. He set it down next to him and sunk slightly lower to the ground stretchin his long legs out to the opposite end of the hallway. Why couldn't he get a break today?

*'cause someone really cares about you. He listened as she explained that they must have an air of caution while dealing with the situation, that Shady had family in danger now too. That didn't surprise Sans; the kid had managed to hide behind the royal family to fool the monsters, what would make this situation any different other than there were more people to kill? So child murderers were not common. Well that was expected, most children were innocent but the thing parading around as a child was far from being such.
* they aren't normal underground either. monsters don't have the desire to take a life from another.
The skeleton only noticed after he said it that he spoke as if they were still underground. Ten years didn't undo centuries that quickly. The skeleton watched as she started picking up some of the papers scattered about after handing the man a cup of tea. Slim was being awfully quiet about the situation. Maybe that was his way of dealing with stress. A lot of people would still be in full panic mode instead of trying to drink scalding tea on the floor of some random building. It seemed the guy had more sense to him that Sans gave him credit for, aside from siding with a psychopathic zombie demon child during a fight that could have solved the issue before it had a chance to begin.
Then came a question about his diet.
* nope.
A simple answer was all he gave before opening the bottle and pretty much downing the whole thing. Surface ketchup was a lot sweeter than the stuff they had underground. That was probably due to the tomatoes actually getting light that wasn't from luminescent crystals.

All Winter could do was let out a silent sigh as she watched the young man, who seemed to calm down a bit, but it was clear that the truth had hit him harder than she had intended. She'd never been good at keeping secrets, but all things considered Shady seemed to be handling things better than Winter could have hoped. At the very least, he wasn't acting recklessly and charging in after the kid by himself, so some sense had prevailed and she could work with that. She glanced over at Sans remark, however, her gaze lowering almost in guilt as she thought about her own sorted blood. Sure, Winter had tried to distance herself from that life, from the very way of hatred that had stolen her father from her, but now that chips were down was she really any different from them? Willing to go crawling back and turning to possible murder as a solution? "I wish I could say the same about humanity. However, when it comes to them as a whole, when there were no monsters around, they just as quickly turned on each other." Winter explained calmly, in a tone that seemed to speak from experience or perhaps as someone that was merely a student of history. "Human studies have shown that most killers do tend to exhibit such sadistic tendencies at an early age, though they usually don't progress to humans until they've reached adulthood. It's these rare cases, where murders occur before one becomes an adult, that even the current law system tends to have some difficulty in deciding how to deal with such individuals... All the more reason to call in people with experience and that won't hesitate when things go down." She added objectively, the last part giving a clear indicator that she was not talking about the average police officer. Despite her level-headed demeanor and ability to spout crime facts, however, Winter had to admit that she didn't work very many homicide cases and had only seen one serial case in her time as a detective. As much as she hated calling on old associates to aid in dealing with the matter though, this wasn't something that they could take to the cops. Without bodies, without evidence, the only ones getting locked up would be them and that wouldn't fix their problem. No, she needed people whose resolve wouldn't make them question appearances, that wouldn't panic if they had to dispose of a body when things went south. With any luck, her old man's name still held enough sway and fear to earn one more favor for his wayward brat. Fortunately, as Shady sipped on the hot tea, Winter was pleasantly distracted by Sans, who with a simple answer proceeded to tip the entire bottle upside down and drink it like a beverage. Her mouth fell open and she had to shut it almost immediately to keep from loosing part of her hot dog. She didn't know what to say, but her eyes had gone wide, filled with a mix of fascination and wonder at what she had just witnessed. Where did the ketchup even go? Did skeleton's even have a stomach? How rude was it to come out and ask about another monster's anatomy? "Sans?...How?- Where?-... That's not going to get on my couch, is it?" Winter finally asked, stumbling over her words as she attempted not to be rude, but overcome with a new sense of curiosity. Sure, she had questions before back at the hotel, like how his bones stayed together and how similar they were in comparison to a human skeleton, but that was before she knew that he could eat and that his diet consisted of ketchup. There was a lot of things going through his mind right now, probably not enough to keep his mind off how much his lips felt getting scalded by tea but made it a bit duller. Well since he finally knows the truth on the girl he had to make sure he didn't tip her off either, he was gonna be around the most since she trusted him the most...and that's only because he's the only one of the three that hasn't tried to kill her, yet atleast. He wasn't sure if he could even do that, he's never taken a life before and he wasn't even sure if he could stomach it. He felt a bit useless here, he wasn't a brain here like the detective that seemed to have everything going to plan neither did he think he was gonna be useful in a fight. Right now the best thing was to listen to the brains here and try to be complient, whatever it took to protect his family and end whatever devious plans the kid had he was gonna be whatever he needed to be.
Taking up the cup of tea he silent walked over to them with the shadows seeming to lightly draw towards him as he set it on the desk and found a wall next to the couch to lean against as he took another puff. As the shadowwelp let the smoke go he listened in on the conversation, sounds like they were talking about the kid. "Sounds like our bony friend had the right way dealing with THis individual. If we want to end this quickly I can make that happen maybe." He could bring the brat right to them while he's "helping" Chara find their parents. He rather end this sooner rather than later but had to atleast ask them about it before trying to run through with it.

*'cause someone really cares about you. Slim seemed to agree that killing the kid was the right thing to do. Well, that was one of the two that thought it was a good idea now that they knew the truth about them. The skeleton was still a little surprised that they both believed him so easily. Unfortunately, they missed their chance and had to play it slow. Chara was certain to be well on guard now that she knew that he was after them. As an investigator, Winter seemed to do a lot of studying. She stated some facts about human serial killers as he drank the ketchup.
The reaction she gave was quite amusing, nearly dropping her food and sputtering. Humans seemed to have that reaction when he ate anything. Sans gave a bit of a laugh at her reaction but decided to let her question his existence just a bit longer to see what she would do.
* eminem, you should try a 'dog before they get chilly.
Maybe next time he should make some of his water sausage 'dogs or maybe a hotcat or two instead of buying regular hotdogs. Winter might enjoy one of those. They deserved a break from the Chara induced stress, at least for a little while. They had plenty of time to most people would be waking up for the day.

Winter continued to finish off her hot dog in silent contemplation as Shady seemed to conclude what seemed to be the most logical solution at this point. The only way out of this mess and ensure everyone's safety was to kill the kid. It sounded so easy, so then why did she still feel so much guilt wrench a knot in her stomach at the thought? "Perhaps,... I'd still like a chance to speak with the kid one-on-one when we confront Chara." Winter suggested calmly, no doubt anticipating some objections to the idea, but she had her reasons and while she did intend to offer Chara one last chance at redemption, it had less to do with believing in the kid's humanity, so much as confirming what needed to be done. "If they can't be reasoned with, my men will have already secured any possible escape routes, so it's merely a matter of sorting out the where and when to give ourselves the greatest advantage and control over the combat location." She continued, her mind already calculating a scheme that would best serve them in their hour of need. "Given what we can surmise, it would be better that I be the first to take on the kid. True, I may not have the fire power that Sans does at my disposal, but they are familiar with you're abilities and have demonstrated some skill in dodging such attacks. On the other hand, I'm an unknown factor, someone they didn't know growing up in the underground. I've been trained in closed quarters against enemies with knives, which you say seemed to be a favored method of the kid, and my control over my magic allows me to sustain for much longer periods in combat." Winter explained with confidence, deciding to lay out in detail what she had in mind. "Besides, while I may not have quite the experience in magic, it doesn't take a detective to know that Sans haven't fully recovered from your last bout. However, in the event that I fail, we will still have succeeded in tiring them out or creating an opening for Sans or one of the boys to end it." The detective finished with a smug grin, playing out each action and movement as though it were little more than a game of chess. Yes, her life would be in danger, but this would not be the first time and she owed Sans that much for getting in his way the first time. Regardless, Sans made no attempt to answer her question, an action that stirred a bit of annoyance in the detective as she struggled with her own curiosity, which was slowly chipping away at her reservations. 'Don't do it!' Those words repeated like a mantra in the back of her mind as she moved cautiously towards the couch. 'Don't do it!' She had to know. It was just one quick peek in the name of science. That couldn't be wrong could it? Winter's shoes halted at the edge of the couch as one hand leaned against the back cushion, essentially pinning the skeleton in his awkward position trapped between the plush sofa and the detectives chest. He wanted to be mysterious, fine! Two could play that game, but Sans clearly had no idea that lengths Winter would go to when bothered and annoyed. "Sans~" Winter practically sang, a low purr to her words and her blue eyes staring down at the skeleton with mischievous glint, offering a side to Winter that few people ever saw. "How exactly does one eat without a stomach?" She asked trying to hide a devilish grin, allowing the fingers of her free hand to ghost just above his white shirt in warning. Although, the message was clear enough that even a child could understand. If he choose to ignore her questions again, she was going to lift up his shirt and find out what she wanted to know. No, it wasn't playing fair, but Winter didn't like secrets and she didn't like ketchup on the couch. When it came to obtaining knowledge though, she would use any tricks and pranks at her disposal. Aesop arched his brow hearing Winter's words...he thought she meant cops when she meant her folks but..that didn't make sense for them to try and help with something like this...Did this woman have other connections...less legal ones? He was a little impressed and thought she was gonna try and put authorities in this. But when she said she wanted to meet the kid first he had to say something.
Wait a minute, you seem really smart and all but. Ain't that a bit fishy already if you confront the kid? He wasn't the sharpest knife in the set but he wasn't dumb either...usually."I mean if this kid is as crafty as you said, don't you think it's off with someone who tried to kill them meets them all of a sudden.." It wasn't like he cares for or anything but..he didn't want any spilled blood where it didn't need to, he rather just take care of one thing and be done with it."I'm just saying..maybe have some extra backup on you just incase...hiding isn't hard for me and they wouldn't see it coming probably. She sounded confident but also cocky... That's always a bad mix when you put something together..

*'cause someone really cares about you. It seemed the plan was set then. Corral the kid into a corner and then talk. Sans wasn't too happy about the talking part he had tried that in the past, sought to convince the demon to reset the damage they did and then leave without spreading more dust. It hadn't worked at all and just seemed to delight the kid. But for the moment, the skeleton was going to trust his new friend. She made mention of having 'friends' which seeing as she had nearly no connections to cops he came to a rather odd conclusion. Winter could just be talking about some bar buddies but for some reason, organized crime came to mind. He was a fan of mobster movies out there.
It seemed that Shady didn't hear him when he suggested that the guy get a hotdog. Instead, the man stated that he wasn't too keen on the plan if things went south. He had a point, but Chara was used to killing monsters, not humans. A steel bullet was harder to dodge than a magic attack, and Sans was sure the kid wasn't familiar with modern weaponry.
He went to reply to the guy about his concerns when his name was called. Winter had made her way over to him and attempted to pin him to the couch with the demand that he tell her how he ate. In response, he let gave a nervous laugh before appearing next to Slim. It seemed in her quest for answers she completely forgot about his ability to teleport away. Granted, he was still recovering as he hadn't been able to get all that much sleep but he had gotten enough of his minuscule stamina for a few more teleports.
* how 'bout you wait until there's no audience until you ask me to strip? i'm sure spaceman here doesn't want to see your bdsm fetish.
Of course, he was referring to her handcuffing him to the hotel bed. He grinned at the investigator. If she wanted his answer so badly she was going to have to try harder than that.

Her cold gaze was fixated on the skeleton, right up until the moment that he had vanished away once more before her very eyes like a faerie or sprite, much to Winter's curiosity. She'd almost forgotten about that handy little trick, but the more times that she saw it, the easier it was to get a general idea of how it worked. If it had been a trick of mere speed, then he wouldn't have been able to get past her, but now she was sure that he was slipping through dimension or teleporting outright, a discovery that seemed worth all the trouble as she turned back and plop down on the couch in thought. However, Winter decided to leave the matter alone, so that she could focus on the young man's inquiries, which was made no better by Sans interjections. His taunts earned a subtle blush and a look that seemed to confirm she was far from finished with the skeleton just yet. "Aye, a private detective's work is never done." She answered tiredly with a sigh, a momentary surrender that she would have to solve the mysteries that surrounded Sans at a much later time. "My dear Slim Shady, you have severely underestimated my abilities. I do not intend to confront Chara head on, much less alone. Sans will watch from a safe distance, along with you, should you see fit to come, to act in the event that Chara lashes out and I fall in combat. I will also be calling in about half a dozen former associates of my father, who...." Winter hesitated a moment, trying to find the proper words to describe the men in question. "I had hoped to avoid the need to ever tell another living soul this, but my father was a member of organized crime family, a group that the FBI and many international courts now recognize as the Irish Mafia. The men that I intend to ask are old associates of his that would do me a small favor, such as cleaning up or preventing Chara's escape. They have the experience and can also be used in combination with the kid's own natural paranoia to lead them to a predetermined location. We can ensure that there are no witnesses, we can control the battleground, and more importantly, we can control the escape routes, as they will be armed should the worst case scenario occur." She explained calmly, though there was a part of her that wondered how the pair would respond to the fact that she was of criminal bloodlines. "For my own mental clarity though, I need to confirm why the kid is doing this and be the one to stop them if things go wrong. I was the one who stepped in, I put people in danger, all because of a single moment of weakness, so please, allow me to fix my mistake?" Winter requested solemnly, as it became clear that this was much about strategy as it was about pride. Winter had started this and she wanted to end it, on her terms. After she had learned the truth, and when it was over, she would be the one to carry the blood of the child on her hands, if it meant she could protect her friends and the other innocent people around them. There were a few things he didn't expect to hear today and what Sans just described probably wasn't one of them. Shifting both the rest of his cigarette and his eyes between the two he shook his head and decided maybe he should go, the kid would be up soon and he had to come up with a story on where he was. He didn't want their secret be found out anytime soon and since he was smoking he could say he was buying smokes and used up a few on his way home, he did run through a pack quickly. "Alright lovebirds, you can get your dominatrix on as soon as I leave. Once this is all over don't expect me to join ya."
He gave a little smirk before walking out the room and looking for anything resembling a coatroom or a closest, easiest way to shadowjump and be out their hair. As soon as he opened the door to it he closed it behind him and like one of those paranormal movies it opened back up to reveal everything inside except him. The next few days were going to be long and tiring for him, but now he atleast had allies and hopefully a plan not to get anyone killed accept the brat....and he was still thinking of doing it in himself but he wasn't sure if that was wise. He would just have to wait and see when was the right moment to strike, until then, he would play pretty little clueless for now.Winter Callahan and Sans

*'cause someone really cares about you. Oh would you listen to that, Shady had a sense of humor! The investigator shot Sans a glare as she turned red from his comment before she attempted to change the subject. She peeked his interest when she mentioned her father's associates as Shady ducked out. Ah well, the skeleton figured he didn't want to know vital information about the plan.
* ok, see ya slim.
Sans spoke up before turning his full attention to Winter as she explained that her father was the head of a mafia. So he was right and also positive that the mafia she knew was nothing like television. He wanted to know more about the actual workings of the mafia, but then she stated again that she wanted to talk to the kid first. He would have to look it up on the internet later if he felt up to it. The skeleton wasn't too keen on that idea.
* we should just jump 'em. talking won't do any good.
He stated the words plainly. He wasn't about to tell her that him trying to speak to the kid ended in him dying. Determination could go both ways and from what he had seen Chara had more than enough to keep them from SPARING anyone. Despite being able to use magic, Winter was still part human which meant she held at least some determination. She was putting it toward wanting to break through to the kid. It was both endearing and frustrating at the same time to him.
* it's not just your mistake and on top of it, more things are at stake here than your pride.

Not surprisingly, Winter didn't find Slim's little joke nearly as funny as Sans had and her brow lowered in annoyance, but she offered no objections to his deciding to head back before the kid realized he was gone. After all, perhaps it was better that he not be aware of all the sorted detail, lest he accidentally tip the kid off or worse, that he be forced to lie about them to a court system later on. Winter was treading into dangerous waters by calling on her father's old associates and she could have lost a lot more than her job if anyone had ever put the connections together. She watched quietly from the couch as the hybrid used the nearby closet to disappear into, instead of the front door, like he was never there to begin with. Monsters and hybrids really were an odd bunch, though Winter assumed that one of these days, she would grow accustomed to this sort of thing and not be quite so shocked by their wide array of abilities. Her expression grew more somber when Sans spoke, however, recalling that it was probably smarter to just surprise the kid and finish them off. Winter knew that he was right, but his next words stung a lot more than she'd wanted them to. "I know, Sans. I just..." Winter tried to explained, raising a hand to rub the back of her neck as her words failed her. How was she suppose to explain? Even she knew it was a bad idea, but where Winter was normally used to explaining it off as something pragmatic like curiosity, in the end, she knew it had nothing to do with logic. "I know evil exists in this world, but I know from experience that a life isn't something that can be taken back. If there's even a chance that we're wrong, if they could change, don't I have to at least try? She questioned adamantly, allowing a sorrowful smile to perhaps placate the skeleton's doubts. "Just in case I'm wrong, they won't share the same sentiments on second chances. I promise, I won't let anyone else get hurt, Sans." The detective reassured solemnly, aware of Sans motivations and the real reason that he was concerned. She wouldn't allow that to happen, no matter what it cost. Her life was one thing, hardly worth concern in the grand scheme of things, but Winter wouldn't allow the kid to rampage through the city unchecked. If the kid wasn't smart enough to see the light, they'd find out what the powers-that-be were on the surface and they tended to carry a few more guns that the pacifistic hybrid.
