Elaine hated when she had to be bundled up. She was lately growing more and more monster traits, looking less and less like the perfectly human baby. So everything had to be tucked away in clothes that were slightly baggy and she had to wear a hat. Aimi hated it since Elaine hated it, but when they were shopping among humans the risk was too great not to do it.
So with the promise of some ice cream and the aid of a stuffed animal friend Aimi successfully ushered Elaine out shopping.
The woman was looking at fruit, picking out some plums when she realized it. Elaine had wandered off. She started panicking immediately. "ELAINE?!" she cried, desperately, loud. Pushing her cart along she walked rapidly, her eyes scanning for the wayward little girl. "Elaine, sweetheart? Elaine!"
Aimi kept calling, her heart pounding so hard it felt like her chest might burst. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the cart, eyes scanning. And if Elaine took off her hat or pulled off her shirt or anything everyone would see and then what would happen? They might kill her they might kill her oh God they would kill her she's just a little girl she's all lost and probably not scared she doesn't know to be scared around humans yet she's such a friendly happy girl --
The thoughts kept pounding in her head, making her feel sick.
"Elaine, please come out for Mommy! Elaine! ELAINE!" She kept calling, desperate - and then, there.
Her wayward child, still bundled up, next to the toys and next to another human. Aimi rushed to the child, picking her up. "Elaine, sweetie, I was worried sick! You know better than to run off," she scolded. Aimi frowned at her cart. Elaine was almost too big for it, but maybe... She started to work the toddler in, but Elaine was having none of it. She squirmed and pushed and fought.
"Wanna walk!" the child cried. She looked desperately at the stranger standing near her. What was she going to do with her baby girl?

The things required tomorrow will be different from today Anya hated being out in public more than she had to be. So when she found herself in the store on a crowded afternoon, she was already in a pretty bad mood. Looking for toys for her old friend's new son was difficult--she wasn't particularly fond of children, but she didn't have any friends to spare and so found herself in the toy aisle.
She noticed the small child standing next to her but didn't acknowledge it, hoping the mother or father would come along and take the kid away. Sure enough, a frantic woman came around the corner and began calling for the child, who responded. Anya sighed and edged away as the woman picked the child up, but soon found herself being looked at pleadingly.
"What do you want me to do, lady?" she asked, more sharply than she intended. "She's not my kid."

Right, humans.
If Aimi were around a monster, she could really on their attempts to help. But this was a human and there was no guarantee of anything. She shook her head and turned to focus on Elaine again, pleading with the toddler to please cooperate. If Elaine was going to run off, then dangit, Aimi was going to do something in response.
Like put her in the cart which she was almost too big for. Of course, Elaine was having none of it and Aimi was doing everything she could to keep her daughter from shrieking. The thing is, she desperately needed help. But there was no-one to help.
Maybe she should make the switch over to monster food and monster-made items completely, but monster food still was strange for her to eat. Elaine had grown up with both monster food and real - sorry, human - food, so it was natural to her, but Aimi couldn't be completely comfortable with it.
Still, if shopping was just a little easier, a little less worrisome... Aimi finally managed to get Elaine hooked in the cart. The child squirmed and started to cry.
"No, no, shh. Lainie, c'mon now. Don't cry. You ran off so it's only fair that Mommy wants to keep an eye on you to make sure you're safe." Aimi grabbed the stuffed cat Elaine had been carrying around, making her do a silly dance in a desperate attempt to calm her child again.
She looked over at the other woman who was still nearby. "I'm so sorry about this," she said apologetically. She was a little embarrassed, but this was normal of children. Aimi thought.
Oh God, how she hoped it was a normal kid thing.

the things required tomorrow will be different from today Anya sighed. She didn't have any right to be mad at this woman or her child--it wasn't their fault she was in a bad mood. She forced a smile and faced the woman.
"Don't worry about it," she said, voice softer than it had been a moment before. "Kids will be kids." She had no idea if that was true or not--she'd never had extensive experience with children. But it seemed to be what the woman needed to hear, and so it's what she said.

She seemed to relax just slightly at the woman's kind words; she relaxed all the way when Elaine didn't burst into tears. Aimi gave an uncomfortable smile.
"My name's Aimi. And yours?" She offered only her first name since she was simply talking with this person. I mean, likely they'd never run into each other again. Still, her stomach tied itself into knots. "Oh - this little one is Elaine." She smiled at the kid, who was now chattering away to the stuffed cat. So talkative. So friendly. So innocent.
Aimi sighed, rolling the cart back and forth as if she was rocking a crib. It was clearly habit, and Elaine was able to ignore it. What was she going to do when Elaine was too big for the cart? She supposed she'd have to put the child in the basket itself, and just fold up the top so it was still vertical. The woman wasn't sure if that would be easier or harder.
Awkwardly and belatedly, she held out her hand. Right... shaking hands. This was a polite thing to do when meeting people. She hid her embarrassment well, but something seemed slightly off about her smile.

the things required tomorrow will be different from today Anya, for her part, felt as awkward as the other woman. She wasn't used to social interactions, and she was clearly uncomfortable.
"Anya," she responded to the introduction curtly but not rudely. At Elaine's introduction, she forced a smile and waved at the child. She took the outstretched hand when it was offered and gave a firm handshake before releasing--that, at least, she knew how to do somewhat properly.
Sensing the other woman's discomfort as acutely as her own, Anya decided to maket he first move toward easing them both. "So, you here looking for a toy for the little one?" she asked, her smile becoming slightly less forced.

The question did leaps and bounds to calm Aimi too, though the whole time she looked calm and collected. She had mastered the art of pretending to be fine while simultaneously feeling as though the world was falling apart. At the woman's question, she shook her head. " Oh no. Today, my shopping is all practical." She smiled a bit at that. " But Elaine certainly is more interested in the toys than in boring groceries." She was extremely grateful Anya hadn't mentioned the fact the girl was in thick, baggy clothes despite the weather. She tugged Elaine's had back on more firmly over her head, absently patting the child's hand. " How about you? Looking for a gift for some child?" She tilted her head, curious. Or perhaps the toy was for herself - Aimi was hardly going to judge. Heaven knows she played with Elaine's toys when she cleaned. ((wooc;; sorry this took so long << Anya Ryder ))
