Grillby

It was nice seeing the bar filled with the different faces of Monsters. They chatted amongst each other, eating and drinking merrily. It was a sight he’d worked hard for, not that he ever said much about it. He was content to just see familiar faces. Smiles and woes alike, at least it wasn’t like before.
Before they had come to the Underground… Well, things were starkly different. He couldn’t deny he missed it up above… He missed the sun. It was sort of empowering to think that there was an orb of fire high above in the sky lighting up all the land before them. It was one thing about that place he would never forget.
However, there had to come a time to part ways with it… and with the desire to see it, again.
And that was fine. Compared to the chaos that ensued after the Humans attacked, Grillby was content to stand there in his bar and clean dish after dish, make order after order… The younger ones were so lively, their minds so full of curiosity. It had taken quite some time for others to forget… For memories to fade and new Monsters to be born. It wasn’t as quiet, anymore, and they were venturing closer and closer to uncharted territory. Territory that he and a few select others remembered, but spoke little to nothing of.
That old geezer Gerson liked to talk a lot, though. He told stories to any passerby who would listen. Whether they believed him or not was… well, he was a bit of a chatter box. Gerson would forget what he was talking about if he went on for too long, so luckily it wasn’t a fright for the younger ones.
Grillby sighed, holding up a glass to the light to see through it. Clean as a whistle, just the way he liked it.
He set the glass down and glanced over at Sans who was happily eating his french fries. He seemed rather fond of the child with him… Grillby had a feeling he knew
exactly what that child was. He may have never seen a Human in person before, but he caught onto things much more quickly then most.
So… why wasn’t
he saying anything? Why was he just cleaning dishes and serving this
Human?Honestly, he saw nothing wrong with them. They were powerful creatures if they put their minds to it. Formidable in battle and strong in their will. They had gotten carried away by fear, but anyone could. The
Monsters were. They so boldly boasted of being able to kill a human if they got the chance. The word alone bore such an ill stigma that anytime it arose in conversation it seem to hang in the air like a physical entity, and a sort of
weight would press down upon them.
But they were living, too… As much pain and suffering as they had put his people through, they were
not simply beings to be disposed of without a second thought. The Humans may have forgotten this about the Monsters, but… the things he heard circulating through his bar reminded him of back then. Of the war. It reminded him- each expression when it was brought up- of a similar viciousness and disgust that the Humans had worn as well.
Grillby wanted no part in another war.
Though, if worse came to worst then he would fight. He would fight to keep them safe, not to reclaim lost land.
He was a bit disappointed… King Asgore was doing something he just couldn’t agree with, and now instead of reporting the sighting of a Human… well, he just wanted to see where it went.
Not all Humans were bad…
And if worse came to worst… Well, perhaps
then he’d take part in this gruesome idea of slaughtering poor, unsuspecting
children that found their ways into this place.
The most frightening part wasn’t even knowing that Humans were innately stronger, but the idea that he could be letting this little one go only to someday find less and less patrons in his bar. Perhaps his parental instincts would lose him others who were dear to him.
There was so much to consider, and so he remained silent. He didn’t mind when the bird spoke for him. It was just easier that way.
It wasn’t that he couldn’t speak… He’d just promised someone else that they’d be the first he spoke to when he returned… When he returned from that war that they weren’t truly able to keep distanced from the other Monsters. From their friends and their families. He’d promised her that she’d be the first one he said hello to.
He was still waiting for that opportunity, not that anyone else remembered by now.
