*'cause someone really cares about you. Not surprised at her relief when he agreed to be patient, Sans watched as Winter's face lit up at his suggestion of getting some food. She was ecstatic at the idea and hoped up to get her laptop. Her reaction was one step below Pap's level of energy at the suggestion of getting sweets. He had an internal ping of missing his brother even though he probably was away from home for maybe a day at most now. He would have to find a gift for Papyrus before he headed home, a snowglobe or something simple. Luckily the guy wasn't hard to shop for. As soon as she had her things ready, the skeleton stood. He was a small bit shaky for a moment having still a relatively high level of exhaustion that he hadn't recovered from, but Sans had steadied himself by the time she turned around as if he was okay to be up and about.
He walked over to the door like a normal person instead of teleporting like the lazy guy he was and opened it up, gesturing for her to exit first before stuffing his hands back into his pockets. With quick glance outside he noted the name of the motel which confirmed that they were indeed where he thought they were. He never stayed at the inn, granted he didn't have the need to since he has his own home.
* the place is about two blocks from here. i know the guy who owns the joint which means discounts.

Her gaze was fixed on the skeleton as he stood, a little wobbly at first, but that was probably to be expected considering he hadn't slept nearly enough to combat his exhaustion. Winter might have brought up the suggestion to continue resting, but assumed that Sans would just brush off the matter again or say that he was fine, so remained quiet. After all, she was going to be with him and still had her fair share of magic to protect him, if worse came to worse. It was difficult to explain the odd connection that Winter felt with Sans, despite knowing so little about him. Even so, she worried for his sake, a rare notion for the otherwise cool-headed detective. All Sans wanted was to stop a murderer from hurting someone, if that didn't make you a good person, then Winter didn't know what did anymore. A genuine smile crossed her features at his words as Winter followed him out the door, listening as he explained. "Sounds cool." Winter answered, throwing in a small pun by accident, all to aware that Sans seemed rather fond of making them and deciding to try it just one for the sheer sake of amusement. Despite her age, Winter was not above a few immature moments, but there seemed no harm in it just this once. MADE BY VEL OF GS AND ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

*'cause someone really cares about you.
As they exited the building Sans was pleasantly surprised when his company made a pun. It almost seemed like his skeleton grin got a little bigger as he gave a bit of a laugh in response. Now that was something he didn't get from his skelebrother an appreciation for the finer things in comedy.
* heh, ice one.
He replied with his own pun while he started walking. He could tell they were going to be rather good friends if she got a kick out of terrible puns. Luckily for her, he had books of them along woth other jokes for all types of occasions that he was just waiting to use for the perfect opportunity.
* we’ll have snow problem finding the place.
He assured her with a now happier tone. She had crossed the threshold from stranger into punpal territory which ment the skeleton was already working out ways to prank her when she least expected it. So many possibilities now he pushed almost all external signs of stressing over Chara’s return away despite the conflicting feeling of worry for friends and famuly vs new friend happiness. He decided that he wouldnt show his stress to his new friend now that they were on a happier note.

To her shame, Winter couldn't remember the last time that someone had made her laugh. Maybe when she was a kid? She was so serious as an adult, trained to take charge and remain composed in the worst possible situations that it was rare to see her relax or cut loose. Heavens knew, she didn't keep many close friends. At most, there were only the occasional associates for work, the sort of people that you were friendly with, but never dropped your guard around to maintain some illusion of professionalism. Yet, here she was, trying and failing not to crack up over some ice puns with a talking skeleton. This was so absurd, so why did it feel like the heaviness of the situation had lifted? Chara was still out there and even if they couldn't escape the technological net that she'd cast in advance, that didn't remove the danger. Still, seeing Sans relax, even just a little, seemed worth the effort of listening to a few bad puns in the end. Maybe she was going soft in her old age or perhaps, there was something endearing about someone who could wear a smile for the sake of someone else, especially when she knew that he had to be worried about the situation himself. No one who'd acted so recklessly could have let it go that easily, of that much Winter was certain. It would have been easy to brood the day away in the hotel room and no one would have blamed him for it, but instead here was Sans, trying to make her laugh and lighten her mood of all things. When she finally managed to corral her own chuckles, Winter managed to speak, though it was still hard to hide a smile. "Aright, so you know the place? How long have you lived in the city, if you don't mind me asking? Do you have any family here, or is it just you?" Winter asked curiously, before seeming to catch herself. "Sorry, just trying to break the ice, but old habits as a detective die hard." She added with a proud smirk and a shrug, attempting to excuse her natural tendency for being curious. All things considered though, few people could blame her for a general interest in such an unusual specimen of a monster. How many skeletons did one get the chance to meet on a daily basis? *'cause someone really cares about you. Laughter was a good thing to hear in such troubling times. Especially at his more than cringeworthy jokes. He was always good at covering up emotional pain with comedy, and most people were none the wiser to it. This time, he was having a bit of fun himself even with her questions. Pun for pun it seemed it was on he decided he’d see how many puns he could fit into his answer to see if he could get her to tear up from laughing. It seemed like a fun enough challenge for him, and she seemed pretty up to it.
* i have a cool bro who’s been chilling in the city with me for the past ten years or so. We have a nice cube of an apartment uptown. you'd love my bro. he's great.
Oh, Pap would be dying of annoyance with San's puns. Despite that, he couldn't help but gush a little when talking about his brother. That was one thing that made the skeleton genuinely happy even if he did poke fun at Pap every now and again. While they walked, he routinely glanced at shop windows. Sans was checking for potential gifts that he would need to grab before heading home.

She didn't think it was possible, but to her amazement and amusement Sans managed to pull off quite a few more puns in his answer, a feat that made the joke even funnier than it should have been. Winter just couldn't help herself and another series of laughs escaped, sending her shoulders shaking and a hand retreating to her cheeks to brush away the moisture that had collected there. It took a few more breaths to steady herself enough to talk, motioning as if to wave a white flag. "I give up. You're clearly more experienced at this than I gave you credit for." She confessed with a smile, a faint shade of pink still glittering across her cheeks as she conceded defeat as her laughter grew to a soft chuckle and his words sank in.
"That's sounds really nice." Winter began with a wistful look, her mind drifting back to a time when things had been simpler and when the world had seemed a little less cruel and unforgiving than they did now. "I was an only child growing up, so I never had any siblings. Always wondered what it would be like. Just listening to the way that you talk about him and how proud you are though, he sounds like a really wonderful guy, Sans." There was a certain sincerity to her words that was hard to ignore, but as Winter thought back there was something that still continued to claw at the back of her mind. It was as though there were a piece of the puzzle that she were missing.
It was the first time that she'd heard Sans speak about his brother, but it was apparent even to someone with nothing more than common sense that they shared a bond and he was someone that Sans would do anything to keep from losing. So, why attack the kid? He had to know that even if he had succeeded he would have been arrested and put in jail for his crimes, taken away from the person he cared about, so then why? If he had failed, the option would have been worse. There had to be more to the story. Why didn't he just tell someone else and get help? How was he certain that events would result in a fate worse than the ones presented to him? What was she missing?

*'cause someone really cares about you. There it was, tears of laughter. The comedian of bad puns struck again, and Winter conceded to his horrible string of puns. Only two other people laughed that hard at his jokes, so it was nice to find a third. They weren't far from the shop now. Time moved pretty quick when having fun. Sans listened as she spoke about how she was an only child. He tried not to think about not having his brother around, but the image of dust laying in the snow outside of Snowdin came to mind. Quickly shaking off the image and welcoming a new distraction he spoke.
* he really is, and an equally great cook too if you can get past the overcooked pasta. after all of this is over i should introduce you to him.
After it was over could go many ways, and he decided it was best to avoid those thoughts. Ahead the stand was coming into view. It was a small portable stand painted blue and orange with built-in tables to the sides and a crudely made snowman on the top holding a sign which was written in illegible handwriting. It was as if a child had created the decorations with as many nick-nacks and stickers glued to the side of the structure. Despite the outward appearance of the place, it seemed to be a hit with locals as a good amount was hanging around all with snowcones of varying colors. Notes template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

"I'd like that." Winter answered simply to the prospect of meeting his brother when it was over, flashing a familiar warm smile in reassurance, all to aware of the dangers that faced them moving forward. However, she was still optimistic that there was some way that they would both manage to make it out of this alive. Far as Winter was concerned, there were no other alternative outcomes that were acceptable as a detective. She didn't need to know Sans life story to see that his actions were based on desperation, rather than any malice or other motivating forces, and that unlike other potential criminals, he was no threat to society or the greater population. He was just someone in a bad situation with his back against a wall that was trying to hold on to his family, but no one willing to make that kind of sacrifice should have to experience the pain of losing their loved one, a pain that Winter knew better than most. Even if she had to resort to extreme measures, she would stop this madness, hopefully with a solution that didn't require someone serving jail time. Sadly, Winter had never had much of a poker face and it was evident when she finally spotted the unique cart, because her eyes immediately lit up in an almost child-like sense of wonder as her smile widened a bit in excitement. Despite attempting to mentally reign in her antics, it was hard not to take in all the colorful creations as a few patrons lingered around, giving some indication of what she had to look forward to. There seemed to be a whole rainbow of flavors to choose from and while her mind was busy sorting out which one she wanted, she decided to let Sans take the lead, since he had previously claimed to known the owner of the quaint stand. The large, hulking form that was the King of Monsters cast a large shadow over the bar for the small stand that sold Shaved Ice. Asgore had recently been rather bored, to be honest. Political debates with Humans and trying to work towards peace was just so exhausting at times. Yes, it needed to be done. And yes, Asgore was glad to do it. But even he needed a break every once in a while, King or not.
And seeing the smiles on childrens faces when they ate his Shaved Ice was just the perfect pick me up for the gentle giant. They seemed to love the Nicecream mix that he mixxed into the ice, which is what gave it it's flavor. The energy restoring treat was delicious, after all. Even Frisk loved the stuff!
Hearing someone approach, Asgore turned around, dressed in a flowered hawaiian style shirt and jeans. He smiled at the skeleton and his friend, waiving a hand to them. "Howdy!" Asgore spoke. "How have you been, Sans? And who might your human friend be?"

*'cause someone really cares about you. Noticing the child-like excitement that passed over the human's face, Sans once again found himself comparing her to his brother. Yep, they would get along fine once everything was over and done with and hopefully the demon child was put down for good. Once close enough he noted the Dreemurr behind the counter, smiling away in his awful floral print shirt. The Skeleton stepped up to the counter while being greeted. He casually ignored the question about how he was and jumped straight into introducing the human. He noted that the monster king was looking less round since the last time he saw the man. Sans had a good guess to why the king would want to do such a thing. So he decided to joke with the guy.
* 'sup? this is winter she's a private investigator, and it seems like you've been shedding more than just fur.
Following up that he leaned on the counter and looked toward Winter before gesturing at the furry monster. He figured she'd get a kick out of the guy's title. She seemed interested in monster culture so getting the inside scoop from the king of monsters.
* this is king fluffybuns.

Winter offered a polite smile as the monster behind the counter waved and greeted them cheerfully, though she was silently struck with stark contrast in height between the skeleton and cart's owner. Then again, Winter stood about average for a human female, so there was nothing remarkable about her own appearance and blending in was sort of a trademark of her heritage. However, if not for his friendly demeanor and amusingly floral printed shirt, she could understand why some might have found the monster intimidating at first glance. Sans was quick to introduce her, recalling her trade, but leaving out the real reason for her presence. That was probably a wise move, since civilians would probably only complicate matters. Even so, Winter couldn't quite put her finger on why this monster seemed so vaguely familiar. Maybe she'd seen his species in a storybook as a child? "Fluffybuns?" Winter parroted in confusion and slight amusement, glancing between the pair for a moment, as it suddenly dawned on Winter where she had seen him before. Her expression faltered in disbelief as a mix of horror and embarrassment flooded her features - king wasn't a nickname. It was only the biggest case surrounding monsters in the past decade and it had been all over the news. "Oh my gosh, Sans." She blurted out in exasperation, a hand rising to her face in disbelief. He'd said he was meeting an old friend, not that they were meeting royalty and Chara's adopted father. A little bit more warning might have been nice. "It's a pleasure to meet you. My apologies, your majesty, I'm um, well... When Sans said he knew the owner, I wasn't expecting, um, Monster Royalty." Winter tried to explain, failing miserably as she glanced down at her feet, her cheeks flushing in awkwardness and feeling like a fool. MADE BY VEL OF GS AND ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

"Sans." Asgore spoke, looking at the child-sized Skeleton. "I've asked you before, but please don't call me 'fluffybuns' in front of humans." He said, sighing. Of course Asgore didn't mind the nickname around other monsters, but now was different. He had a reputation to keep among humans. He couldn't afford to be the big fuzzy pushover he used to be, at least not in public. Otherwise he and his subjects would get walked on by Humans. And what was the point in that if he was fighting for equality?
More to the point, the human Sans was with seemed to know who Asgore was, at least by reputation. That was a good sign. He was getting known by the average person, and not just those who followed his story. At least, that was what he thought. Asgore smiled, reaching out to pat the young girls head. "Oh, it's no problem at all." He said. "You need not apologize, it wasn't your fault."
Something seemed odd about this human girl, though. Something wasn't quite right. Just like with Frisk, and Chara, this girl had something more to her. DETERMINATION, perhaps? Yes, that was part of it. But it wasn't pure human DETERMINATION. Asgore could feel it.
"Young lady, you wouldn't happen to be Yukiko's daughter, would you?"

*'cause someone really cares about you. It took a second for the name to sink in but as soon as it had, Winter was flustered. It didn't take much to set her off, did it? The skeleton couldn't suppress a slight laugh as she apologized for not knowing she was visiting the actual king of monsters. He glanced up at the king just in time for him to be passively scolded by the guy for using the underground's name for him. All the monsters used it when referring to Asgore amongst themselves ever since that day they all heard Tori say the pet name.
* where's the fun in that, fluffy?
Sans questioned the king with a playful wink and all intentions of not using it again. He quietly watched as the king reached over the counter to pat the P.I. on the head like a child then brought up a name. Sans didn't take into consideration of which of her parents was the monster because frankly he didn't really care. The king, on the other hand, liked to know every monster by name since they all knew his. Despite being a jolly pushover, the guy did make a genuine effort to be a good leader to monsterfolk. He couldn't see them having a better leader.

Winter tried to keep from smiling as Asgore scolded Sans for the use of his nickname only to have him shrug the matter off, though the mistake that she was human was a common one and not one she bothered to correct immediately. Sometime, it made it easier when people didn't know the difference. When a massive paw was placed on her head though, it was hard to get over it's immense size and all Winter could do was stand there in a state of awe. She really did feel like a child in comparison to how enormous the king was to her own height. It was odd that she never felt small in around human, whether that was because they shared DNA or because her personality compensated for what she lacked, but when it came to monsters it was a totally different story. She was always floored by the sheer variety that seemed to exist, despite their confinement to the Underground for so long. It was only at the mention of her mother's name that Winter perked up one more in surprise. "Yes sir, Yukiko is my mother's name. My father was the human, Connor Callahan, but how could you know that?" She questioned in confusion. Winter knew that her mother did not age like a normal humans, despite their common and what some considered to be beautiful appearance, but Yukiko had never made any mention of the Monster King to Winter that she could recall. If they had met, it would have had to have been before the monsters were sealed Underground a thousand years ago. Then again, come to think of it, she didn't actually know how old her mother was. Her father had not cared and often joked about loving an older woman. Winter could only recall asking once or twice as a child, only to see her mother skirt around the answer like it was some horrible secret, which was saying something considering her father's checkered past and ties to the Irish mafia. Was her mother truly ancient? Was that why her own abilities had developed so strongly as a child? Her mind was brimming with questions as she tried to wrap her mind around the situation, while trying not to be rude or too forward about the subject, a bad habit the young detective had developed over the years. Asgore might have groaned at the skeleton's reply if he wasn't already used to the pun-lovers antics. While he did get annoyed by San's behaviors sometimes, he couldn't dislike the skeleton. Sans had helped Asgore on more than one occasion, especially with advising Asgore of the time resets and acting as a scout in the underground during Frisk's adventure. The Skeleton seemed to know far more about the workings of the universe than Asgore did, and had always been happy to lend a hand... err, bones.
Of course, Winter was visibly confused when Asgore spoke her mothers name, and Asgore couldn't help but smile that bright, warm smile he always had. "Well, I make it a point to learn the name of every monster under my charge." Which, at this point, was pretty much all of them. King of monsters and all. "Your mother used to live with all the other Monsters before we were sealed underground. She managed to slip away due to her similar apperence to Humans." He said, nodding, crossing his arms. "There are subtle differences to be sure, but you're the spitting image of your mother. Even your magic energy feels almost identical! I'd wager you can cast ice magic like her, huh?"
